The 2008 Australian Derby

April 24th, 2008 : Horse Racing

Randwick’s $1.8 million Group 1 David Jones Australian Derby over 2400 metres has attracted a field of 17 three-year-old colts and geldings.

The early favourite is Littorio who has finished strongly at his past two starts and looks as if the distance will be ideal.

He also likes it soft underfoot. The Cummings family hold a strong hand in the race with Bart Cummings training Book of Kells, who won well last week, and Zazabeau, while his son Anthony Cummings trains Solo Flyer and Dealer Principle, who won the Rosehill Guineas very strongly at his last run two weeks ago.

Gai Waterhouse is represented by Kingda Ka who keeps placing in quality fields and it would be no surprise to see him in the finish here considering the fine form the Waterhouse stable is in at the moment.
