2009 Thousand Guineas – Caulfield
The Caulfield Spring Carnival continues on Wednesday with a solid 8 event programme including a Group 1 and two Listed races. The main race is the Group 1 $500,000 Schweppes Thousand Guineas. It is a set weight race for three-year-old fillies over 1600 metres and there are 14 runners.
The short-priced favourite in the early market is Irish Lights at $2.40, followed by Sister Madly at $6, Majestic Music and Melito both at $10, Silent Surround at $11, Miss With Attitude at $12 and Jolie Brise at $13. Irish Lights with Glen Boss on board have won convincingly at their last 2 starts and look as if the pair can make it 3 in a row. Jolie Brise is by the same sire as Irish Lights – Fastnet Rock – and has 3 wins and a place from 5 starts. She looks as if the 1600m will not bother her. Sister Madly came 2nd at Group1 level last start and should add to her prizemoney again.
Jo’s tips: 1. Irish Lights, 2. Jolie Brise, 3. Sister Madly
Carsales.com.au Classic – Caulfield
The Listed $100,000 Carsales.com.au Classic is a set weight plus penalties race for four-year-olds and upwards mares over 1600 metres. There is a capacity field of 16 plus 4 emergencies and the early betting market is wide open. Running Riot is favourite at $5 followed by Lady Lynette and Lamar (first emergency) both at $6. Next in the market is Purple at $7, Dollops at $8.50, Cameo Min (2E) at $10, Prima Nova at $11 then Belleza Veloz and Dane Julia both at $12.
Purple is the quality mare, finishing her last campaign with a win in the Queensland Oaks. She has had one run back for a 4th at Randwick less than 2 lengths from the winner. Lady Lynette and Running Riot are both race fit and should do well.
Jo’s tips: 1. Purple, 2. Lady Lynette, 3. Running Riot
Debutants Stakes – Caulfield
The Listed $100,000 Inglis Debutants Stakes over 1000 metres is a set weight race for two-year olds and has a field of 10 unraced youngsters. The market is framed as ‘Win Only’ and colts take the top 4 spots in the betting. The early market has Tropic Thunder at $3.50, Dark Valley at $4, Ebony Rock and Spirit Cent at $6, Indulgent at $6.50, Very Cherry and Crystal Lily both at $7.50 then Malbun at $8.
On breeding I like Ebony Rock, Tropic Thunder and Very Cherry but this is a race to watch the betting and follow where the money goes.
Jo’s tips: 1. Ebony Rock, 2. Tropic Thunder, 3. Very Cherry
Caulfield racing will wrap up on Saturday with the Caulfield Cup and then Spring racing moves to Moonee Valley for the Cox Plate.
