Stradbroke Handicap – Eagle Farm
Eagle Farm has a fantastic 8 race programme on what is expected to be a heavy track. There are 3 Group 1 races, 2 Group 2 races and 3 Listed races, with the main event the Group 1 $1 million AAMI Stradbroke Handicap over 1400 metres. Black Piranha is the $3.80 early favourite in the 20 horse field. He was a close second behind Apache Cat two weeks ago and at his two previous starts he was a close second behind Vision and Power in the Doncaster and the George Ryder.
Next in the market is the filly Ortensia at $7, who is the only three-year-old in the field. She has drawn wide in barrier 16, but is very fast with 7 wins and 3 placings from 10 starts. The next line of betting has last years Stradbroke winner, Mr Baritone, and Bank Robber both at $10, followed by Danleigh at $11, Absolut Glam at $12 and Snipers Bullet at $14. Rightfully Yours is currently at $26.
Jo’s tips: 1. Ortensia, 2. Black Piranha, 3. Rightfully Yours
Queensland Derby – Eagle Farm
The Group 1 $500,000 BMW Queensland Derby Three-Years-Old Plater is a set weight- race over 2400 metres with a field of 19 runners. The early favourite is Shocking at $4.40, followed by Bid Spotter at $6, Nothin Leica Cat and Larry’s Never Late both at $8, then Rockdale and Court Ruler both at $13,
Berlioz ($15) is yet to be unplaced in his 7 starts and won the 2800 metre VRC St Leger at his last start. Larry’s Never Late has the look of a genuine stayer and can handle heavy going. Bid Spotter has won his last three in a row, while rising in class.
Jo’s tips: 1. Berlioz, 2. Larry’s Never Late, 3. Bid Spotter
T.J. Smith Plate – Eagle Farm
The Group 1 $500,000 Racetree T.J. Smith Two-Years-Old Plate over 1600 metres has attracted a field of 14, but only 13 will run with the scratching of Bally Duff. The early market has Shoot Out as $3.30 favourite ahead of Choistar at $4.40. Next is Impulsive Dream at $7.50, One Lickety Split at $8, Funtantes at $9, then Fast Lover and Spot On Target both at $12.
Shoot Out has been most impressive with his 2 wins from 2 starts, and Impulsive Dream looked good finishing second behind Shoot Out in the Sires Produce last week. Choistar is the only horse in the field who has won over 1600 metres, and looked good with a fast-finishing seond in the 1350 metre Doomben Slipper two weeks ago.
Jo’s tips: 1. Shoot Out, 2. Impulsive Dream, 3. Choistar
Flemington – The main race at Flemington is the Listed $100,000 A.R. Creswick Stakes over 1200 metres where Glam Slam is $3.50 favourite.
Randwick - The main race at Randwick is the Listed $100,000 June Stakes where Kroner is $3.60 favourite.
