The BMW – Rosehill
The $2,250,000 BMW over 2400 metres is a Group 1 standard weight-for-age race for three-year-old and upwards and has attracted a field of 10 runners. The early betting has Viewed as favourite at $2.30 ahead of Theseo at $4 and Master O’Reilly at $6.50.
The track is expected to be heavy which is one of the reasons Viewed is so short-priced as he is proven in wet ground. There is also a slight query whether Theseo will run the distance, as his longest win was over 2200 metres in the 2007 Group 3 Premier’s Cup at Doomben. Newport ($18) looks a place chance as he has won 3 of his 4 starts at this distance and came second in the other. However he has lost the rider at 2 of his last 3 starts and was ordered to trial (which he did and won).
Jo’s tips: 1. Viewed, 2. Newport, 3. Theseo
Golden Slipper – Rosehill
The $3.5 million Group 1 AAMI Golden Slipper over 1200 metres is a set-weight race for two-year-olds and is the richest two-year old race in the world. There is a full field of 16 runners plus 2 emergencies.
The early betting has the colt Real Saga at $3.60 favourite, slightly ahead of the filly More Joyous at $4. Next in the betting is Rostova at $7.50, Reward For Effort at $10, Manhattan Rain at $11 and Delago Bolt at $21 with all other runners at longer odds.
Only 2 runners have won in slow going and they are Indian Ocean ($26) and Horizons ($41), although most of the field has not raced in going worse than dead.
Jo’s tips: 1. More Joyous, 2. Reward For Effort, 3. Real Saga
WA Oaks – Ascot
The Group 3 $250,000 Burswood Entertainment Complex Western Australian Oaks for three-year-old fillies over 2400 metres has a field of 12 runners. The early market has Delta Gee as $3.80 favourite ahead of Admiring at $4.60 and Brava Fortune at $4.80. Next is Full Moon at $7, Jewelled at $7.50 and Cassandara Shadow at $8.50 and the rest of the field is currently at double figures. Five of the field are still maidens.
Delta Gee won her last start over 2200 metres beating Admiring, Brava Fortune and Cassandara Shadow, but meets them worse at the weights. Full Moon is a Melbourne horse who also won her last start over 2200 metres.
Jo’s tips: 1. Brava Fortune, 2. Delta Gee, 3. Full Moon
