Caloundra Cup – Sunshine Coast
The Sunshine Coast has a 12 race programme with the first at 12:15 and the last at 6:52. There are 3 listed races and the main one is the Listed $200,000 CNW Electrical & Data Supplies Caloundra Cup over 2400 metres. There is a field of 13 and the topweight with 57kg is Reggie, one of only 2 mares in the field.
The early market has Our Lukas as $3.70 favourite after his nice win in the Ipswich Cup. Next is Reggie at $4.40, Macknuckle and Alexander of Hales both at $5, Kerdem and Phase Action both at $12, Scattergun at $13 and Cape Breton at $18. Our Lukas can win again, Canberra horse Macknuckle has done well this campaign and should run well here, and Alexander of Hales has been just behind the placegetters in some quality staying races.
Jo’s tips: 1. Our Lukas, 2. Macknuckle, 3. Alexander of Hales
Glasshouse Handicap – Sunshine Coast
The Listed $175,000 Bruce McLachlan Glasshouse Handicap over 1400 metres has a full field of 20 plus 3 emergencies. The topweight is Mr Baritone with 58 kg, and he is also the $5.50 favourite in the early betting market, which is very open. Next is Voice Commander at $6, Mitanni at $6.50, Charming Rogue at $8, Save A Buck at $10, Bareena at $12, Hard To Catch at $15 and Cocktail Supreme and Time Matters both at $16.
Nine-year-old Mitanni has a liking for this track and won the Eye Liner last start. Save A Buck won well at Port Macquarie last start and is second-up, when he usually wins. Voice Commander has been close to the money this campaign and was third in the Eye Liner last start
Jo’s tips: 1. Mitanni, 2. Save A Buck, 3. Voice Commander
Winter Cup – Rosehill
The Listed $100,000 Thomas Hotels Winter Cup over 2400 metres is a quality handicap for three-year-olds and upwards and has a small field of 8. Early favourite is Nuclear Sky at $3, but he is also topweight with 59.5 kg, in a field where no other horse carries more than 53.5 kg. Next in the betting is Fairygem at $4.40, Niwot at $4.60, Come On Cugat at $5.50, Naadji at $7 and Twin Wing at $7.50.
Nuclear Sky is the best horse in the race but has a lot of weight to carry. Come On Cugat was only a short half-head behind him last start and meets him 1kg better off. Fairygem won by over 5 lengths in weaker company last start and showed he is a real mud runner. Rosehill is expected to be a heavy track on Saturday.
Jo’s tips: 1. Nuclear Sky, 2. Come On Cugat, 3. Fairygem
