Coolmore Classic – Rosehill
The Group 1 $600,000 Coolmore Classic over 1500 metres is a race for three-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares, and there is a full field of 16 runners plus three emergencies. The topweight is Hot Danish with 59kg, 3 kg more than the next horse and 8kg above 10 of the field who will carry 51kg. Stewards are allowing several jockeys to ride overweight (by 1 kg) due to a lack of suitable jockeys available to ride at 51kg.
Hot Danish was runner-up to Eskimo Queen in this race last year, and is $3.80 favourite in the early market. Next in the betting is Typhoon Tracy at $6, Judged at $8, Gallant Tess at $9, and Absolutelyfabulous at $10. Eskimo Queen is at $41. Typhoon Tracy has won 4 from 4, and Culminate is a good New Zealand mare who is over the odds at her current price of $41.
Jo’s tips: 1. Typhoon Tracy, 2. Hot Danish, 3. Culminate
Ranvet Stakes – Rosehill
The $400,000 Ranvet Stakes over 2000 metres is the other Group 1 race at Randwick and has attracted a field of 9 runners. The early market has Theseo as odds-on favourite at $1.90, followed by Zagreb and Vision and Power both at $6.50, Viewed at $8 and the rest at double figure odds.
Theseo has looked good in his last three runs, and was beaten favourite on 7 March when Niconero got to him as they crossed the finish. Vision and Power showed he could handle weight-for-age when he was runner-up to Tuesday Joy in the Chipping Norton, and last years Melbourne Cup winner Viewed has run 2 fourths this campaign over 1400m and 1600m and should enjoy the longer distance.
Jo’s tips: 1. Theseo, 2. Vision and Power, 3. Viewed
Schweppes Oaks – Morphettville
The Group 1 $300,000 Schweppes Oaks over 2005 metres is a set weight race for three-year-old fillies, and has a field of 14. The early market has Gallica as $2.40 favourite ahead of Lamarr at $3.60. Next in the betting is Estee at $6.50, Zapurple at $8 and Nanda Kot at $9.
Gallica is a quality filly with 5 wins and 3 seconds from 10 starts. Her last win was 7 March and Lamarr finished 3rd . Estee is proven at the distance and has won at this track before. Zapurple is still a maiden, but finished strongly to run 3rd in the Group2 Autumn Classic over 1800m behind Stokehouse. Nanda Kot has won her last three in a row in weaker fields.
Jo’s tips: 1. Gallica, 2. Lamarr, 3. Estee
