January 13th, 2010 : Betting News

Magic Millions Results

Fillies took out both of the major Magic Millions races on 9th January at the Gold Coast racecourse. Local filly Military Rose led almost from the start to win by nearly 4 lengths in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic giving her the impressive record of 4 starts for 4 wins. Her sire General Nediym won the race in 1997. Graceful Anna won the Magic Millions 3YO Trophy by a long neck for young Warwick Farm trainer David Pfieffer and has now gone to the spelling paddocks.  View all the racing results from the weekend.

Canterbury Night Meeting

Canterbury Park has a twilight meeting this Thursday (14 January). There are 7 races starting at 7pm with the Listed $100,000 Canterbury BMW Classic as the main event. SportsBet has Bank Robber as $2.60 favourite ahead of Pinwheel ($2.90) and News Alert ($5). News Alert was scratched at the Randwick barrier on 1 January when he was favourite in the Carrington and is expected to go well.

Weekly Jockey News

Magic Millions day saw Chris Munce suspended for 8 meetings and Paul Hammersley for 11 meetings for careless riding. In Sydney, Mitchell Beadman was suspended from January 17 until January 21 for breaching whip rules while Nathan Berry and Josh Parr are out from January 17 until January 28 for careless riding. Parr has appealed. Noel Callow returned to racing in Malaysia at Perak on the weekend while WA jockey William Pike will return from Hong Kong to Perth for the birth of his first child.

USA Racing News – Two Jockeys use whip on each other!

If you saw the news earlier in the week you might have seen the footage of two United States jockeys having a fight during the running of a race at Philadelphia Park. They punched each other and used the whip on each other throughout the race. After the race the trainer of horse Mi Helena fired his jockey and told reporters “I’ve been in this game for 50 years. I’ve only seen this once before, on a film.” The footage is well worth a look if you get a chance.
