Golden Rose - 15 March 2008

The 1400 metre Golden Rose, a group 2 for three-year-olds, has been shifted to the autumn this year because of last year’s equine influenza. It will be the fifth running of the race which has already produced 13 group 1 winners.

A field of 13 will face the starter for Saturday’s $1 million Golden Rose at Rosehill and the early favourite is Royal Sovereign Stakes winner El Cambio. Kingda Ka who protested unsuccessfully against El Cambio is hoping to turn the tables.

Hugh Bowman is the only rider in this year’s race to have won it before after claiming the inaugural Golden Rose in 2003 on In Top Swing and then winning in 2004 on Doonan. He is on the Bart Cummings trained Mimi Lebrock who has a definite chance at giving him his third win in just the fifth running of the race.
