BTC Cup - 10 May 2008

With the colder weather the good horses have started to move north to Brisbane. The $400,000 Group 1 BTC Cup will be held at Doomben on Saturday and is the first Group 1 race of the Winter Racing Carnival.

The 1200 metre race has attracted a small field of eight as local trainers are reluctant to run their horses against top sprinter Apache Cat. Apache Cat will be an odds-on favourite in this weight-for-age race and it is hard to imagine him being beaten in this field.

He has won his last 2 starts in convincing style over this same distance and carrying the same weight. He will be lining up for his fourth successive Group One win, being unbeaten in his three starts this year in the Lightning Stakes at Flemington, Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley and T.J. Smith Stakes at Randwick.

His main mission in Brisbane is the Doomben 10,000 on 24 May. The BTC Cup has been run since 1964 and last year the race was won by Bentley Biscuit, who managed to run down Takeover Target in the last 50 metres.
