Early Betting on the 2011 Newmarket Handicap
Three weeks ago we looked at the early market for the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington on Saturday 12 March 2011. At that time Black Caviar was favourite at $2.25 followed by Hay List at $9. If you thought Black Caviar was short-priced then, you can kick yourself for not putting money on her then as now she is $1.35. It always pays to bet a good horse early!
Likely Runners in the 2011 Newmarket Handicap
Black Caviar demolished the rest of the field in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes over 1000 metre on Saturday so easily that she was easing down over the final 100 metres. In the race she carried 2kg less than Hay List. .In the Newmarket she will almost certainly carry the 58kg topweight while Hay List will carry 56kg giving him a big turnaround in the weights. The Newmarket will probably be her last race in a handicap and the rest of her career will be weight-for-age races. Every racegoer I know wants to see her win this million dollar race and make it 10 wins from 10 runs. There are plenty of other good horses in the nominations but nothing that you could realistically expect to beat her, even if she is giving them 6kg , as 52kg is the minimum weight for the Newmarket.
