 Channel 7 Quality Handicap Preview
Doomben – Sat 28 January 2012
There is an 8 race program at Doomben on Saturday after racing was switched to there from Eagle Farm because of heavy rains. The feature event is the Listed $100,000 Channel Seven Quality handicap for fillies and mares over 1200m, where apprentices cannot claim. There is a field of 15 runners with the topweight Paprika carrying 59kg, Skating On Ice will carry 57kg, Jasminka will carry 55kg, and the other 12 runners will carry 54kg. The track was rated as heavy at acceptance time, with overcast weather and the potential for more rain.
Runners in the 2012 Channel Seven Quality Handicap
Skating On Ice ($4.80) is a four-year-old Bradbury’s Luck mare trained by Les Kelly on the Gold Coast. She has 7 wins and 4 places from 18 runs and has won 3 of her 6 starts this campaign. At her latest start she won by ½ length over 1400 at the Gold Coast on 7 January. She has won 3 of her 4 starts at this track including 2 at this distance and has placed in both of her 2 starts in the wet. Rates very highly here.
Paprika ($8) is a five-year-old General Nediym mare trained by Liam Birchley. She has had 15 races for 6 wins and 2 places and has won on both slow and heavy going. She has had one run from a spell for 4th of 12 over 100m at the Gold Coast on 14 January where she chased solidly. Has won second-up in the past and should perform well.
Jasminka ($8) is a six-year-old trained by Brian Smith. She has 6 wins and 5 placings from 17 starts, including 4 wins at this distance. She resumed from a spell for 2.1 lengths 5th over 1110m on a slow track at Doomben on 24 December. She has won all 4 of her second-up starts and has raced twice on heavy going for a win and a second. Looks very well placed here.
Nuptse ($8.50) is a four-year-old Bradbury’s Luck mare trained by Brian Wakefield at Eagle Farm. She won over 1020m at Doomben on 31 December then ran 3rd over 1000m at Gold Coast on 14 January. Hasn’t raced on a wet track and has not won beyond 1100m so could struggle here.
Catashee ($9) has a good strike rate of 5 wins and 6 places from 19 starts. The four-year-old ran ½ length 2nd over 1400m at the Gold Coast at her latest outing on 7 January but does not really have any wet track form.
SlowThe Flow ($9) is a four-year-old Hussonet mare who has won on both slow and heavy going in the past. Her last 2 starts have both been over 1200m at Canterbury where she finished 6th on a heavy track on 24 December and then ran 1.5 lengths 2nd to Vantage Point on 13 January. Could surprise.
