The two day Caloundra Cup Carnival is the Sunshine Coast Turf Club’s major racing event of the year, and boasts more than $850,000 in prize money.
The major races are on Saturday although there are still plenty of good fields on Sunday. The main event is the listed $200,000 Pelican Motors Caloundra Cup over 2400 metres which has attracted a field of 17 stayers, on what is expected to be a dead track.
The top weight is Art Success who seems heavily weighted with 58kg. The early favourite in the betting is Ballack who won the Tatts Cup last week in a controversial protest. Fast Future will meet Ballack on 1kg better terms after being beaten in that protest. The first and second placegetters in the 2007 Caloundra Cup were King Latarmiss and Scattergun and they are both running again on Saturday.
Danny Nikolic was keen to ride Scattergun after riding him in the Brisbane Cup, and feels the horse is capable of taking out the Caloundra Cup this time. Other horses who look like chances in the race are Synonym, Sky Biscuit and Kerdem.
