2011 William Reid Stakes Preview & Tips
Moonee Valley – Fri 25 March 2011
The $500,000 Group 1 William Reid Stakes over 1200 metres is the feature event at the 8 race night meeting at Moonee Valley. The star attraction is Black Caviar, the classy mare with 10 races under her belt for 10 wins and a shelf full of trophies. Currently she’s at odds of $1.08 which may not sound like much, but is way better than bank interest. There are 9 runners, and with $10,000 prizemoney for 6th, 7th and 8th only one runner will go home disappointed. It won’t be Black Cav.
Runners in the 2011 William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley
Black Caviar ($1.08) has won 10 from 10. She gave 8kg to second placegetter Crystal Lily in the Newmarket Handicap when she won by 3 lengths. Now she is back to weight-for-age and the question should probably not be whether she will win, but by how much.
Master Harry ($17) is a three-year-old colt from the Peter Moody stables. He has 3 wins and a place from 5 starts with 2 wins in Listed races and one at Group 2 level. He will probably lead at some stage but I can’t imagine him holding out Black Caviar when she only has 0.5kg more than he does.
Crystal Lily ($19) won the 2010 Golden Slipper. At her last start she put in a great effort to finish second behind Black Caviar but had an 8kg weight advantage. Here the weight difference is only 2.5kg, which means Crystal Lily is 5.5kg worse off. Expect her to put in a good run again.
True Persuasion ($31) saves his best for Moonee Valley. He has had 10 runs here for 4 wins, 5 seconds and a third. He has been beaten by Black Caviar a couple of times with the most recent being in the Lightning Stakes on 19 Feb when he finished almost six lengths behind her. Goes so well at this track and distance you should put him in your trifectas.
Panipique ($41) is a three-year-old filly with very mixed form. She has won 3 of her 9 starts, but has put in a couple of shocking runs too. Looked very good last start when winning an 1100m Listed race at Flemington.
Hinchinbrook ($51) is another of Peter Moodys four runners in the race. He tends to get back and chase, and it would be a small miracle if he could run down the leaders in this race.
