2011 Newmarket Handicap Preview & Tips
Flemington – Sat 12 March 2011
The Lexus Newmarket Handicap over 1200 metres is one of two Group 1 races at Flemington on Saturday that are each worth $1,000,000. The other is the Australian Cup over 2000 metres. There is a field of 12 runners in the Newmarket with many good horses frightened off by the presence of super mare Black Caviar who is unbeaten in 9 runs. The betting market is amazing with Black Caviar well in the red at $1.27 and the next horse in the market is Star Witness at $19.
Runners in the 2011 Lexus Newmarket Handicap at Flemington
Black Caviar ($1.27) will carry 58 kg in a field where last years Golden Slipper winner will only have 50 kg. The weight is a big worry as Hay List meets her 3.5kg better at the weights than when she beat him in the Lightning Stakes last start. However, she is a champion and I am sure only the connections of the rest of the field don’t want to see her win this one. Great sprinters like Bernborough, Wakeful, Placid Ark and Takeover Target have won the Newmarket and Black Caviar deserves her name up there with them. I’m hoping she makes it 10 from 10.
Star Witness ($19) has had some betting support in this race. He has met Black Caviar a couple of times before and she has been far too good for him but he has never met her so well at the weights. He is a Group 1 winner in his own right and will go well.
Hay List ($23) is a great sprinter. He has 12 wins and 2 placings from 16 runs. He finished over 3 lengths behind Black Caviar last start but held the rest of the field comfortably and will finish ahead of most of the field again.
Beaded ($31) is a five-year-old Lonhro mare with a wonderful career record of 9 wins and 7 places from 17 starts. Her only ‘unplaced” run was 4th in the Group 1 Stradbroke Hcp in Brisbane. If Black Caviar wasn’t in the race she would probably be at odds of 4 to 1.
Response ($41) is a Group 1 winner who has had one run back from a spell. She finished 7th behind Eagle Falls in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate when she never got a clear run and went to the line untested.
