2011 Golden Slipper Preview & Tips

The $3,500,000 Group 1 Golden Slipper over 1200 metres is the feature event on a spectacular 9 race program at Rosehill that has five Group 1 races, a Group 2 and three Group 3‘s. There is a full field of 16 two-year-olds plus one emergency and every one of them has at least one win under there belt – even those with only one start. There are 8 colts and geldings and nine fillies in the running for the worlds richest two-year-old race.

Sepoy ($3.30) began his career with 4 good wins in a row. At his 5^th and latest start he ran 2^nd to Smart Missile in the Todman two weeks ago. The race was held during quite heavy rain and he didn’t show his normal brilliance. There were a lot of beaten favourites that day and the weather was certainly the cause. Drawn a little wide in barrier 10 but still one of the top chances.

Smart Missile ($4.20) has won 2 from 2, has drawn nicely in barrier 5 and has in-form Group 1 winning jockey Glen Boss on board. He is the only horse to have beaten Sepoy and will make his presence felt here.

Foxwedge ($7.50) has had 3 starts for 2 wins and a 3^rd. He is one of 5 runners in the race by the sire Fastnet Rock (the others are Smart Missile, Fast and Sexy, Mosheen and Empress Rock). Drawn in barrier 11 he will be wearing blinkers for the first time.

Elite Falls ($10) won the Group 2 Riesling over 1200m last start, finally managing to beat Satin Shoes who she had run 2^nd to at both of her previous starts. Has drawn barrier 16, which will not help her.

Salade ($13) is one of three Bart Cummings horses in the race who have all had 1 start for 1 win (the others are Empress Rock and the emergency Do You Think). He looked most impressive when winning the Pago Pago and is great value at $13.

Satin Shoes ($13) has 4 starts for 3 wins and a 2^nd. Her second was on the rainy day where many good horses didn’t run well. She has drawn nicely in barrier 2 and is trained by Clarry Connors who has a top record with two-year-olds. He has won the Slipper 4 times with Tierce, Burst, Prowl and Belle Du Jour, and last year his runner Decision Time was second to Crystal Lily.
