2011 Coolmore Classic Preview & Tips
Rosehill – Sat 19 March 2011
The $600,000 Coolmore Classic over 1500 metres is a Group 1 quality handicap for fillies and mares. It is the feature event on a 9 race program at Rosehill on Saturday that has two Group 1 races, four Group 2 races and two Listed races. The race has drawn a good field of 17 fillies and mares and the betting market is quite open. The club must be disappointed with nominations for the raceday as a whole, as the fields for the first 5 races are so small that there will be no third dividend.
Runners in the 2011 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill
Aloha ($4.80) has an impressive race record of 7 wins and 6 placings from 16 starts and is only carrying 1kg above the limit weight. She has won her last 4 starts in a row, each by a margin of 2 lengths or greater, and over distances of 1400m to 1730m. She has been kept in weaker company, although her last 2 wins were a Listed and a Group 3 race. The ease of her wins suggest she will be a force to be reckoned with here with her lightweight.
Jersey Lily ($7) has had three runs from a spell and shown a big improvement with each run. Her latest was a win in the Wiggle Quality over 1400m at Warwick Farm where she beat Turnstiles and Kiss From A Rose. Will perform well from barrier 6 and has only been unplaced once in 5 runs at this track.
More Strawberries ($7) has drawn the widest barrier. She is one of only 2 three-year-olds in the race (the other is Miss Gai Flyer). After 2 solid runs from a spell she is probably ready to show her best, but the barrier is not going to help her.
Melito ($7.50) will carry the topweight of 59.5kg, giving 4kg to the second weighted horse and 7.5kg to almost half of the field. She is a quality mare who has won at Group 1 level but has a huge weight and has drawn awkwardly in barrier 11. Take on trust.
Palacio De Cristal ($9) ran 3rd in this race last year behind Alverta. Her run in the Group 3 Millie Fox when resuming saw her finishing the race off very strongly and the extra 200m will help. Has drawn barrier 2.
Graceful Anna ($11) has a career record of 6 wins and 6 places from 15 starts. Since resuming from a spell she has had the frustration of coming second at all 3 starts and will put in an honest run from barrier 5.
