Horse Racing
The Group 1 BMW Stakes is the richest weight-for-age event run in the Sydney Autumn Carnival. It will be run at Rosehill Gardens racecourse on 3 April 2010 (Easter Saturday) on the same programme as the Golden Slipper Stakes. 61 horses are currently nominated for the 2010 race which is a staying event over 2400 metres. Prizemoney is over $2.2 million.
Centrebet Betting on the 2010 BMW Stakes
Theseo is $6.50 favourite with CentreBet. Next in the market is Speed Gifted at $8 then Alcopop, Daffodil and Shocking all at $10. Roman Emperor is at $11 then Our Aqaleem, Purple and Shocking are all at $15. Road To Rock, Sirmione and Vigor are all at $17 then Master O’Reilly and Miss Maren are at $21. The rest of the field are all at longer odds with over 20 nominated horses at prices of $101 to $501.
History of the BMW Stakes
The BMW was first run in 1963 and has been known as the H.E. Tancred Stakes, and the Mercedes Classic as well as the current name of the BMW Stakes. This years favourite Theseo was second in the race last year behind Fiumicino, while Sirmione ran third in 2008. Many of the nominated horses ran in last years Melbourne Cup.
The BMW and the Melbourne Cup
A few horses have won both the BMW and the Melbourne Cup. They are Makybe Diva, Ethereal, Might And Power and Hyperno. Makybe Diva is the only horse to win the BMW Stakes, Melbourne Cup and the Sydney Cup (3200 metres).
