The US Open will be played at Flushing in the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre between 27 August and 9 September.
The tournament has been running since 1881 and this year the prize money for the singles champions will reach a staggering $1.4million with additional bonus prize money also up for grabs.
Last year Roger Federer defeated local hope Andy Roddick to win his third consecutive US Open. The winning streak allowed Federer to share such a record with former great John McEnroe. In the 2006 women’s draw Maria Sharapova defeated the Belgium Justine Henin.
It will be tough competition for all the top seeds in the singles this year. There will be 6 former female champions returning to Flushing in the 2007 including Sharapova, the Williams sisters, Henin, Kuznetsova and Hingis. There will also be 4 former mens champions returning including Federer, Lleyton Hewitt, Roddick and Safin.
Australian fans should keep an eye out for Hewitt to see if he can return to form to repeat his victory of 2001. In the women’s draw Molik will also be one to watch.
