How To Run A Melbourne Cup Sweep
Here are some simple step by step instructions on how to run a successful sweep.
How Does A Sweep Work?
A number of people each buy a ticket in the ‘sweep’. Tickets usually cost between $1 and $5 and represent a horse in the race. Tickets are drawn randomly and odds are ignored.
The prize pool for the sweep is made up of money paid for the tickets. The winner usually receives half of the prize pool, second place gets about a third and the remainder of the pool goes to third place. Sometimes last place, or horses that are scratched get their money back.
How To Organise A Sweep
1.) Download our FREE printable A4 2011 Melbourne Cup sweep page
2.) Set a ticket price e.g. usually between $1 and $5
3.) If you have a large group you can run multiple sweeps with a different value e.g. a $1 sweep, a $2 sweep and for the ‘high rollers’ and $10 sweep
4.) Sell tickets, allowing participants to draw their ticket randomly.
5.) The number on the ticket will correspond with the horse number.
6.) You should record the ticket number for each person ticket e.g. Fred has ticket number 2 in the $5 sweep
7.) Once the race is run you can distribute the prize pool.
