The Melbourne Cup is hosted each year at the prestigious Flemington Racecourse which is located in Melbourne, Victoria. The beautiful track sits alongside the Maribyrnong River and was first used for Horse Racing back in March, 1840. During the 2006 Melbourne Cup carnival it was announced that Flemington Racecourse is now a National Heritage site.
In 1871 the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) was given legal control over Flemington Racecourse which today hosts many of Australia’s top racing events including the Melbourne Cup, VRC Derby, VRC Oaks, MacKinnon Stakes and the Australian Cup.
The Melbourne Cup currently draws a huge crowd of over 120,000 who completely fill up the 3 Grandstands and the huge lawn area along the main straight.

Getting to Flemington Races
Flemington racecourse has its own train station and many revellers will take the train to Flemington racecourse during the Melbourne Cup carnival. Trains for Flemington depart platforms 8 and 9 at Flinders Street Station. You can also take the No. 57 Tram, which will drop you off at the Epsom Road entrance to Flemington Racecourse.
