Bart Cummings 2009 Melbourne Cup Hopes

October 30th, 2009 : Melbourne Cup

When first acceptances for the 2009 Melbourne Cup were announced on 8 September, 11 of the 230 horses on the list (4.7%) were trained by Bart Cummings. They were Allez Wonder, Dandaad, Empires Choice, God’s Hand, Javasea, Joe Blow, Naval Escort, Precedence, Roman Emperor, Think Money, and Viewed. When second acceptances were listed on 6 October he had 7 of the 85, or 8.2% of the horses, with Allez Wonder, Dandaad, Naval Escort, Precedence, Roman Emperor, Think Money and Viewed.

The list of third acceptors stands at 42, and 6 of them (14.3%) are trained by Mr Cummings with all but Precedence making it through from the 2nd acceptance round. Three of the six are guaranteed spots and the other three are all possibles. One betting agency is already taking bets on Cummings being successful on Tuesday versus the rest of the field.

Viewed won last years Melbourne Cup plus the 2009 Caulfield Cup. The six-year-old stallion is around $6 to $6.50 in the Cups market, depending on where you bet, as either equal favourite or second favourite. Roman Emperor is a four-year-old horse who won the AJC Derby and placed 2nd in the Caulfield Cup and is currently $10 to $11 in Cups markets. Allez Wonder is a four-year-old mare who ran 3rd in the VRC Oaks and trounced her rivals at long odds in the Toorak Handicap and is priced at $26. These are the three horse who will all be running.

Still jostling for a starting position are Moonee Valley Cup placegetter Think Money, Geelong Cup runner up Dandaad, and Naval Escort. Dandaad and Naval Escort are both set for the Lexus Stakes on Saturday to try and secure another runner for Bart.

Whether he has three, four, five or six runners there is a very real chance of Bart winning his 13th Melbourne Cup. To say the stable is ‘in form’ is an understatement with the last 3 Saturdays giving him 3 Group 1 wins with Allez Wonder’s Toorak (10 Oct), Viewed’s Caulfield Cup (17 Oct) and So You Think’s Cox Plate (24 Oct).

Perhaps we might see Bart Cummings 6th Melbourne Cup quinella. Or how about the trifecta? Now that I’d like to see.
