Allez Wonder and Alcopop Shorten for 2009 Melbourne Cup

After last Saturdays races the early market for the 2009 Melbourne Cup has changed again and with two horses being giving penalties for their wins the order of entry has been revamped, shuffling a couple of horses further down the boards.

Five-year-old gelding Alcopop, trained by Jake Stephens, won the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes over 2400 metres which means he has now passed the first ballot clause for the Melbourne Cup. He was penalized 1.5kg for the impressive win which means he is now 26th in order of entry for the 2009 Melbourne Cup after being 63rd in order and not passing the first ballot clause before his win.

Four-year-old mare Allez Wonder won the Group 1 Toorak Handicap at odds of $41and could not have looked more impressive. Trained by Bart Cummings the mare looked as if she could have happily have gone round again and gave young jockey Michelle Payne her first Group 1 win. She had already passed the first ballot clause and was penalised 0.5kg for her win moving her from 49th position in order of entry to 17th which means she is guaranteed a start.

The last horse to win the Herbert Power Stakes and the Melbourne Cup in the same year was Rogan Josh in 1999, trained by Bart Cummings. The last horse to win the Toorak Handicap and the Melbourne Cup in the same year was Galilee in 1966, also trained by Bart Cummings.

Allez Wonder will be going into the Caulfield Cup next Saturday (17 October) and on her run in the Toorak she is good enough to win it. It is not decided if she will go on to run in the Cup.

The latest Cup market still has Efficent as favourite at $6. The next nine horses are Speed Gifted at $7, Alcopops at $7.5, Viewed at $11, C’est La Guerre and Vigor at $15, Master O’Reilly, Cima De Triomphe and Allez Wonder all at $17 then Daffodil at $21 and Shocking at $23. However things will change after Caulfield Cup day.
