2009 Melbourne Cup Market Following the Caulfield Cup

Following the Caulfield Cup there has been the expected reshuffling of the 2009 Melbourne Cup betting market. Bart Cummings trained the quinella of the CaulfieldC up with Viewed, winner of the 2008 Melbourne Cup, and Roman Emperor, winner of the 2009 AJC Derby. Viewed moved in price from $11 to equal favourite with Efficient at $6, until going out to $7 after announcement of his weight penalty. Roman Emperor firmed from $31 to $10.

Vigor ran third and firmed a little from $15 to $13, while Daffodil ran fourth and firmed from $21 to $15. Daffodil was found to have sustained a deep cut below a knee, giving further merit to her performance. Jockeys on three of the first four horses were fined for excessive use of the whip. Chris Munce was fined $3,000 for hitting Daffodil 16 times (10 more than allowed) before the final 100 metres. Brad Rawiller was fined $500 for hitting Viewed 5 consecutive times before the final 100 metres, while Corey Brown was fined $250 for hitting Vigor on consecutive strides on two occasions before the final 100 metres. At this rate the VRC will have to employ a bevy of whip counters for the Cup!

Viewed has been penalized 1 kg for the 2009 Melbourne Cup after his Caulfield Cup. This will give him equal topweight with Efficient, and they will be carrying 2 kg more than any other horse in the field. This is a very serious penalty as only 26 horses have carried 58kg or more in the last twenty years. Only one has won – Makybe Diva recorded her 3rd Cup win in 2005 with 58kg.

The latest 2009 Melbourne Cup betting market has Efficient as favourite at $6, Alcopop at $6.50, Viewed and Speed Gifted both at $7, Vigor at $13 and Daffodil at $15. Next is Master O’Reilly at $17 then Shocking, Kirklees and C’est La Guerre all at $21 then Changingoftheguard at $26.
