The TJ Smith Stakes is one of Sydney’s youngest races. It was first held in 1997 as the Listed Endeavour Stakes when it was won by Mahogany. In 1998 it was renamed in honour of legendary trainer Tommy Smith who died later that year after dominating Sydney racing for over 30 years. It became a Group 1 race in 2005.

The race attracts top quality sprinters from across the nation. Interestingly since becoming a Group 1 race no runner has had over two runs that preparation before winning the race.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse is the daughter of Tommy Smith and has won this race named in honour of her father several times with Phoenix Park (2002), Shamekha (2005) and Bentley Biscuit (2007).
