In addition to the Caulfield Guineas, which has a total prize money over $1,000,000, The Vinery Stud Thousand Guineas Day and the BMW Caulfield Cup are held during the Caulfield Cup Carnival weekend.
The Caulfield Guineas is for three-year-olds, has set weights and is run over a 1600-meter turf course.
First run in 1881, the Guineas has been won by such topliners as Lonhro, 2001; Redoute’s Choice, 1999; Our Maizcay, 1995; Mahogany, 1993; Red Anchor, 1984; Grosvenor, 1982; Manikato, 1978; Luskin Star, 1977; and Surround,
1976.
Wonderful World, ridden by Luke Nolen and trained by Bart Cummings, won the 2006 outing in a time of 1.35.98. Excites was second and Court Command finished third.
Cummings trained God’s Own, with Glen Boss up, won the 2005 Caulfield Guineas. Cummings has five Guineas cups. His other winners were Alfa, Kenmark and Storm Queen.
Other recent winners include Enconsul, 2004; In Top Swing, 2003; Helenus, 2002; Show A Heart, 2000; Kenwood Melody, 1998; Encounter, 1997; Alfa, 1996; and Our Maizcay, 1995.
In the past ten years, Steven King and R. S. Dye each have two Guineas wins. King won in 2000 on Show a Heart and in 2002 on Helisso. Dye’s wins were back-to-back. In 1997 he won with Encounter and in 1998 with Kenwood
Melody.
The longest priced winner of the Guineas was Abaridy, who went off at 250-1 odds in 1986.
