The Ashes Series is a furiously contested cricket tournament held between rivals Australia and England. The series dates back to 1882 when Australia defeated England by seven runs at The Oval in London.
Following that match, a satirical obituary was published in “The Sporting News”. The obituary stated that English cricket had died and “the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia”.

The series, which is held biennially and alternates between the two countries, got its name when the media called England’s 1982-1983 tour to Australia as “the quest to regain The Ashes”.
The trophy, which is presented to the winning team, is a small terracotta urn. The contents of the urn are said to be ashes of an item of cricket equipment. The Ashes urn is permanently housed in the Melbourne Cricket Club at Lord’s. Since the 1998-1999 series a Waterford crystal trophy, a replica of the urn, is presented to the winning club.
The Ashes series is usually played over five test matches, although there has been four match and six match series played. A total of 293 matches have been played since the start of the series. Australia has won 115 times and England 92. There have been 86 draws.
In each country the matches are held at different cricket grounds. In Australia, current venues are The Gabba, Adelaide Oval, The WACA, Perth, the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the Sydney Cricket Ground. English grounds
include The Oval, Old Trafford, Lord’s, Trent Bridge, Headingley, and Edgbaston.
