As the Caulfield Cup gets closer you will find a huge amount of information and stories will become available, and eventually you will realise that just about every horse in the field has been tipped by someone. This can be overwhelming and you need some way of choosing which information is significant and which is not. In horseracing what happened in the past is often a good guide to the future so look at statistics and trends regarding past Caulfield Cup winners.
Caulfield Cup Trends
In recent years the Caulfield Cup has been won by horses which are either genuine weight-for-age horses who have class and the ability to run over 2000m to 2400m distance, or solid stating types with the ability to sprint at the end of 2400m. Look for good runs, not necessarily winners in the major lead-up races of the Group 1 AJC Metropolitan, Turnbull, Underwood and Yalumba Stakes, the Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes, formerly known as the Craiglee Stakes, and the Group 3 Craven Plate.
Caulfield Cup Statistics
Not many mares win, although there are a few good chances among the 2011 nominations. Four-year olds have the most Caulfield Cup wins, followed by five-year-olds. The topweight is often the winner in the Caulfield Cup.
