Named after one of the founders of Australia’s Victorian Football League, the Charles Brownlow Medal is awarded yearly to the “fairest and best” player in the league during the regular season.
Over the years the Victorian Football League evolved and became the Australian Football League (AFL). The Brownlow Medal was first presented in 1924 to Edward Greeves of the Geelong team.

Voting for the Brownlow Medal is done by the umpires, who after every home and away match, vote for whom they believe were the best three players in the game they just officiated.
They award three votes for the best player, two for the next best and one for the third best. At the end of the season the votes are added up and the Brownlow goes to the player with the highest seasonal total. There have been other voting procedures for short periods in the past, but the current system has been used for the majority of the Brownlow Medal votes.
A player suspended by the AFL disciplinary tribunal during the season is ineligible to with the Brownlow award that year, although his total points are logged. 2011 AFL Brownlow Medal Odds

Adam Goodes of the Sydney Swans won the medal for the 2006 season by three votes over Scott West of the Western Bulldogs. Goodes finished with 26 votes to 23 for West. Daniel Kerr, West Coast, was third with 22 votes and Chris Judd, West Coast, and Brad Johnson, Western, ended up with 21 and 19 votes, respectively.
Goodes is one of only 12 players to win the Brownlow Medal twice. He shared the 2003 medal with Mark Ricciuto, Adelaide, and Nathan Buckley, Collingwood, when the three tied in the final vote. Robert Harvey, St. Kilda, is the only other player to win the medal twice since 1990. He was awarded the honor in 1997 and 1998.
Four players have won three Brownlow Medals: Haydn Bunton, Fitzroy, 1931, 1932 and 1935; Dick Reynolds, Essendon, 1934, 1937 and 1938; and Bob Skilton, Sydney, 1959, 1963 and 1968. Eight other players, including
Goodes, have two medals.
In 1998 Harvey tallied 32 votes, which is the highest number of votes to win the medal. The fewest votes to win was 17 by Greg Williams, Sydney, and Robert DiPierdomenico, Hawthorn, in 1986.
